NSCC A'paqt Project - May Newsletter

May 2025

NSCC Nautical Institute

A’paqt (Sea) Project Update

The Nautical Institute has been busy with presentations and information booths at schools and in the community, on-campus experiences that included guests trying out the marine navigation and engineering simulators and seeing the wave tank in action, and numerous courses taking place. The Strait Area Campus held the Marine Foundations – Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (MF-SVOP) program in February. We also congratulated students who finished their coursework in April from our core programs: Bridge Watch Rating, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Management Technology and Marine Navigation Technology.

We have some exciting training opportunities coming up! From June 9 to 13, we are offering a Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) course at the NSCC Wagmatcook Learning Centre.  We look forward to filling seats in our Marine Foundations – Marine Emergency Duties (MF-MED) program happening in June 18 to July 7, 2025. Also, we are offering our Marine Navigation Management Technology advanced diploma again to help Marine Navigation Technology graduates move up the ranks to management roles.

If you are interested in having a Careers at Sea presentation or information booth set up at your school or organization in the coming months to inspire and inform your students or clients, please let me know and we'd be happy to arrange a visit. Learn more about Careers at Sea.

Funding Available

Through the Oceans Protection Plan, Transport Canada has partnered with NSCC to deliver training to underrepresented groups in the marine sector. To encourage diversity at sea, bursaries are available for women and Indigenous peoples who enroll in Marine programs.

Ocean Dream Award

This award program has been established to support those who are interested in and have a passion to explore a career in the marine industry. Recognizing the significant financial, social and cultural barriers that women and Indigenous peoples face when pursuing post-secondary education, this bursary will help offset educational costs, ultimately encouraging greater participation in marine training and careers. Funding will cover 90% of tuition fees.

Ocean Living Award

Women and Indigenous students who receive the Ocean Dream Award are automatically considered for additional funds through the Ocean Living Award. This award assists with living expenses (up to $10,500 or $66/day) while enrolled in a marine program. No application is required.

Empowering the Next Generation

Fully Funded Skilled Trades Training and Career Launch Program

About the Program:

Empowering the Next Generation is a national initiative funded in part by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment and Skills Strategy. Operated by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, this program is designed to provide underserved youth with a barrier-free path into the skilled trades.

It specifically aims to support youth who are furthest from employment — those facing multiple barriers to entering the workforce — by offering real opportunities for skill-building, confidence development, and career connection.

By offering fully funded in-class and on-the-job training, the program addresses skills shortages, builds job readiness, and helps participants overcome systemic obstacles to employment. It emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion while offering hands-on experience and industry-recognized certifications to support long-term career success.

Participation in this program does not require joining the union. There is no obligation for participants to become members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters unless they choose to pursue that pathway after program completion.
The only requirement is a commitment to fully participate in and complete the 8-week program.

Program Highlights:

  • 4 weeks of in-class training (30 hours/week at provincial minimum wage, varies by location)

  • 4 weeks of paid on-the-job training ($25/hour for participants; employers receive an additional $5.38/hour to offset costs)

  • Full professional tool kit and PPE provided to all participants

  • Travel assistance (mileage reimbursement or transit passes)

  • Childcare support ($25/day during training and work placement)

  • Earn industry-recognized certifications (First Aid, WHMIS, Fall Protection, etc.)

In-Class Training Location:

Carpenter Millwright College (CMC) – Nova Scotia Campus
1000 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville, NS B4E 0C2
