What is the Urban Indigenous Youth Outreach Program (UIYOP)?

Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre’s Urban Indigenous Youth Outreach Program is a youth-led, centered program that supports Indigenous youth withing the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) with meeting their individual goals, dreams, and development by providing access to cultural supports through the MNFC.

The UIYOP also provides opportunities for youth to make connections with other young people within the community to ensure the development of long-term supportive relationships can be sustained through modeling opportunities.

Who do we serve?

The Urban Indigenous Youth Outreach Program serves youth ages 12 to 24 years old who live within HRM and may need support addressing the following:

  • Cultural and personal identity

  • Personal life skills development

  • Basic needs

  • Health and well-being

  • Relationships

  • Crisis and emergency responses

  • Mental health and addictions support

  • Employment and volunteering

  • Housing and safety

How does the UIYOP work?

Youth are encouraged to participate in the UIYOP; however, it is voluntary, and Youth can choose to leave the program at any time or when the youth’s needs are met.

Referrals can be made directly by.

  • Youth

  • Parent/guardian

  • Teacher/principal

  • Indigenous Student Support worker

  • Mi’kmaw Family & Children’s Services worker

  • DCS Social worker
